A Living History of Shaddongate in Carlisle
Between 1788 and 1841, the population of Caldewgate tripled to over five and a half thousand. Handloom weaving and other textile industries formed the main employment of these outlying districts. Mass immigration further served to change the character of the city. In 1832, of 7130 males over the age of twenty in Carlisle, 1870 had been born in Ireland and about a thousand in Scotland. The majority of these immigrants settled outside the walls. |
